Syracuse, New York: USA small city family getaway

About Syracuse and Central NY

SUNY Upstate Medical University is in the city of Syracuse, in Central New York State.

Syracuse is often called "the Crossroads of New York State" because of its central location and because two main interstates (I-90 and I-81) cross here. The area is a region of rolling hills, flat plains, lakes, and streams. It is an affordable place to live, with a reasonable cost-of-living compared to other metropolitan areas in the state. Local schools offer high quality education to students of all ages, from elementary to college. While many residents live downtown, others take advantage of short commute times and live in the surrounding suburbs.
About Syracuse

Family Fun

The city proper has a mix of offerings, nearly all of which are within walking distance of each other. The Creek Walk connects Armory Square to the Inner Harbor and Onondaga Lake. The Everson Museum of Art and the Museum of Science and Technology are great places to spend a few hours. Syracuse is home to the Syracuse Crunch, AHL affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and to the Syracuse Mets, the AAA minor-league affiliate of the New York Mets. Syracuse University athletics always draw big crowds to the Dome.

Resources for parents

One factor that attracts residents to our program at SUNY Upstate is the affordability. The Syracuse area offers many different housing options within a reasonable commute to the hospital campus, four-season activities, and excellent schools. We are fully supportive of resident parents (and residents who become parents during training). We have cultivated a list of local daycares and pediatricians that we recommend. In addition, we adhere to the American Board of Pediatrics statement on Absences from General Pediatrics Training.
